I posted this information on my Flickr account a few years back. Every few months I have to visit the middle of Adelaide city to deliver to honey clients and meet old friends.
So I am reposting this article to remind people which human activity has the worst impact on my son’s health.
Smokers choose to put out the flame upon the ground they live, walk, and breathe in – all without fear of the ongoing horrors they cause when these filters wash into the water-system they drink from!
But worse still, they stub the cigarette on the edge of street-bins – like the photograph displayed. What part of carcinogenic don’t you understand?
Did you know: These stubs have to be cleaned up by the Adelaide City Council Street Sweepers every morning! Every bin has the top cleaned each evening, the area surrounding them swept of the debris YOU leave.
For the love your children, if not yourselves, take your cigarette butts with you! Your disgusting habit is costing the tax-payers tens of millions of dollars each year to keep our city clean. These Bins are NOT an Ash-Tray!
But more importantly, your willingness to kill yourself with noxious fumes is the single biggest killer on the planet. More people die from excessive nicotine than from any other drug. Cigarettes are one of few products which can be sold legally which can harm and even kill you over time if used as intended:
Benzene (petrol additive)
A colorless cyclic hydrocarbon obtained from coal and petroleum, used as a solvent in fuel and in chemical manufacture – and contained in cigarette smoke. It is a known carcinogen and is associated with leukemia.
Formaldehyde (embalming fluid)
A colorless liquid, highly poisonous, used to preserve dead bodies – also found in cigarette smoke. Known to cause cancer, respiratory, skin and gastrointestinal problems.
Ammonia (toilet cleaner)
Used as a flavoring, frees nicotine from tobacco turning it into a gas, found in dry cleaning fluids.
Acetone (nail polish remover)
Fragrant volatile liquid ketone, used as a solvent, for example, nail polish remover – found in cigarette smoke.
Particulate matter drawn into lungs when you inhale on a lighted cigarette. Once inhaled, smoke condenses and about 70 per cent of the tar in the smoke is deposited in the smoker’s lungs.
Nicotine (insecticide/addictive drug)
One of the most addictive substances known to man, a powerful and fast-acting medical and non-medical poison. This is the chemical which causes addiction.
Carbon Monoxide (CO) (car exhaust fumes)
An odorless, tasteless and poisonous gas, rapidly fatal in large amounts – it’s the same gas that comes out of car exhausts and is the main gas in cigarette smoke, formed when the cigarette is lit. Others you may recognize are :
Arsenic (rat poison), Hydrogen Cyanide (gas chamber poison)

Betting nobody read that right the way through! But if you did, and you smoke, here’s hoping you quit today! #crossedfingers #foryourchildshealth #quitsmoking #quitday #justquit
